Please
Please remind me in future, cleaning the bathroom at 1 in the morning is never a good idea....

Scents and sensibilities
The day started well enough - a cheery good morning and a slightly acerbic 'you're looking trim dear' from a camp friend. The sun soon burned off the morning mists, and people came out to enjoy the High Street's varied cafe culture. The smell of coffee filled the air - intoxicating...
Last week's sniffer put in a brief appearance - luckily my boss was with me so I managed to evade a conversation by dint of escaping to the loo - the only whiff the sniffer got of me was in passing... perhaps I should change my perfume? (But I like this one - Truth, it is called...) Anyway, a couple of tunes later - ipod with me at all times! - and he had gone... phew!
What else? Ah yes. Gave an elderly gentleman quite a fright with a sudden explosion of mirth (caused by online friends - you know who you are!). Poor chap jumped out of his skin... calmed him down with a glass of water and a liberal application of apologetic charm - he did see the funny side pretty much straight away.
Saw a few people who were at the wedding, compared anecdotes etc...
A rather lovely Latin American wanted a copy of Love In The Time Of Cholera - he was thrilled that we had it.
A very good friend came in for a chat, bringing with her her 10 month old son. He is quite scrumptious and gigglesome, and I had a lovely time swinging him about and cuddling him and generally squidging him, while he grinned winsomely and blew raspberries at us both. A delightful wee man. I might have to steal him...
I love my job. This afternoon I showed what the future has in store for a 6 year old boy - he's getting to grips with reading, and loves the junior Dr Who books, and Narnia... he came in with his father who was looking for something in the howBarackObamawillsavetheworld line... I showed them the Science Fiction/Fantasy section... the boy's little face lit up, as I told him about The Hobbit, and David Eddings, and Terry Pratchett, and everything... a treasure trove of wonders to come...Do you remember the excitement felt on reading something truly amazing for the first time? He has it all before him...
The day has been a long one, but it has ended well, with a bunch of early lilac from my mother-in-law's garden. Purple and white, the perfume fills the air here, and I have only to lean a little to my left to bury my face in the scent. Bliss.

And another thing....
Why is it that hymns sung in church are always in a key uncomfortable for most normal people to sing within their usual register? What is with that??
PS
Hurrah for British Gas Boiler engineer people - now have a working boiler, which means hot water and heating... YAY!
Weddings and Wardrobe malfunctions
So my brother got married today. I t was lovely, overall, despite the fact of being in a church, which always makes me angry - especially when singing Jerusalem; don't they realise that the phrase 'dark satanic mills' refers to the established church?! Religion is the art of hypocrisy... but never mind that for now. When my brother and his bride exchanged vows I was genuinely moved. Sod the religious imagery - the act of commitment is a beautiful one, however you dress it up.
For the occasion, I splurged on a pretty frock, and glamourous pink high heels. Waiting in the churchyard before and after the ceremony, kept seeing people passing through whom I hadn't seen for an age - most complimentary - which always gladdens the heart. Hours later am now drunk in charge of said frock, sequins, beads and all. It was a beautiful day, for a beautiful couple - and I'm proud that they are my family. Think I'd better hit the coffee, now....
The wardrobe malfunctions? Hold up stockings that didn't always want to hold up - the left leg in particular - and a shoulder strap that kept pinging out of its hook - thank heavens for an obliging husband, otherwise the other guests would have been seeing rather more of me than I had bargained for...
